4 Tips on How to Improve Your Local SEO

Do you own a business that caters to a local area and want to improve your search engine rankings? We’ve put together four simple SEO tips you can use to gain traction in local SEO. Once you’ve set them up, the upkeep is minimal, and the rewards are significant.

  1. Update and Optimize Your Google Business Profile

The most important and effective tool you have for local SEO is your Google Business Profile. Start by claiming or creating your Google Business Profile. Then, verify your business via phone, text, email, or video. Complete your profile, but don’t stop at adding the bare minimum of information.

Include the following to amp up your listing:

  • Full Business Name
  • Physical Address
  • Phone Number
  • Logo
  • Photos of both the interior and exterior of your business
  • Categories your business falls under
  • Attributes, such as LBGTQ+ friendly or veteran owned
  • Hours of operation
  • FAQ
  • Special Offers
  • Responses to Reviews

Once your profile is verified, make sure you check regularly for customer reviews and questions that require your attention.

2. Ask for Reviews

When you complete a job or make a sale, ask the customer for a review. Good reviews have a significant impact on local search engine results pages (SERPs). Work on increasing your rating and number of reviews. This not only helps SEO but also offers proof of your excellent products and services to potential customers.

3. Add Local Content to Your Website

By providing local signals in your content, search engines will associate your business with your target area.

You can do this by:

  • Mentioning your city on product or services pages
  • Creating blogs that refer to your community or geographic area
  • Using local indicators in image descriptions in a gallery
  • Creating individual branch or location pages that include location-specific info

4. Check for and Add Local Citations

Google looks at citations as a sign of local authority, so ensure you’re listed with correct business info on websites such as Google Maps, Yelp, Bing, and Facebook. Submit your business to local business directories and niche directories containing listings for businesses like yours.

These four local SEO tips will help boost your business in local SERPs. Please note that this isn’t a one-and-done process. Monthly additions to your Google Business Profile with updates, posts, and images are necessary. Requesting reviews is ongoing. Submission to directories often requires follow-up. And adding new, unique, local content to your website is a good weekly or monthly practice.
